...and one meets these people who have nothing, bugger all, or at any rate so much less than I have but who are, nonetheless intelligent, in some cases educated but in all cases worldly wise and rich in things in which I am so poor.

Claude this year - he knew so much about history and when I spoke of obscure kings he knew of them and their stories and could add to them. He had nothing, was living on a campsite until a rented flat became available. All his worldly goods were there in his tent, a few shelves decorated with kitchen utensils - all these would make his home in the rented accommodation that would be his world at the end of the summer.

But the walls are so thin, so flimsy and the roof increasingly heavy with snow. Or is it snow? So soft, so gentle, so light and yet within a little hour the fear of falling walls.

There's the question of how long this can go on: not long I suspect. The road has been hard and the rests few and surely it's only a matter of time now.
